Medellín to Coffee Region Cycling Tour via Alto de Letras

Ride from Medellín to Colombia’s Coffee Region climbing Alto de Letras, one of the world’s toughest and most beautiful mountain passes.

Begin in Medellín and ride through Eastern Antioquia and Guatapé before reaching Honda. Conquer Alto de Letras through Los Nevados National Park, passing Alto del Sifón to finish in Colombia’s Coffee Region. A journey of climbs, contrasts and pure cycling spirit.

Stage 1: Medellín Cycling Route: Eastern Antioquia Start

Distance: 76 km. Elevation: 1446 m.

A perfect start through Medellín’s favorite training roads in Eastern Antioquia. Pedal through routes loved by local riders and set the rhythm for the days ahead. The ride connects blending rolling climbs, fresh mountain air and the vibrant energy that defines Antioquia’s cycling culture. It’s the ideal warm-up before the long stages that follow toward Colombia’s Coffee Region.

Distance: 85 km. Elevation: 1378 m.

Ride from El Retiro through La Ceja and El Carmen de Viboral toward Guatapé, one of Colombia’s most colorful and iconic towns. The route winds through green highlands, peaceful backroads and small rural communities that reflect the charm of Antioquia’s countryside. End the ride with lunch and time to explore Guatapé’s cobbled streets and the views of its vast reservoir before returning to Medellín by private transfer.

Distance: 32 km. Elevation: 204 m.

A recovery stage before the queen climb. The road heads down from the Andes toward the Magdalena valley, where the heat and humidity take over. A gentle spin through Colombia’s warm lowlands, perfect for easing the legs and mind before facing Alto de Letras.

Distance: 92 km. Elevation: 4214 m.

This is the queen stage: Alto de Sifón, the longest mountain pass in the world. Over 90 kilometers and 4,000 meters of elevation gain — a relentless ascent through changing climates and raw mountain beauty. A cyclist’s graduation ride.

Distance: 68 km. Elevation: 1456 m.

We leave the páramo behind and enter Colombia’s coffee heartland. Lush landscapes, colorful villages, and rolling climbs define this stage — a perfect blend of effort and scenery.

Distance: 49 km. Elevation: 1461 m.

A short but unforgettable ride through the heart of the Coffee Cultural Landscape. You’ll visit Filandia and Salento, then roll into the Cocora Valley, home to the towering wax palms. A perfect finale — rich in beauty, tradition, and meaning.
